'A Room for Steve Reich'
Opening 17 July 09
Showing 18 July - 4 August
Michael Lewarne
|
#4 of medium, rare's Window Box Installation Series.
'A Room for Steve Reich' is the latest in the 'Event Horizon'
series of works by Michael Lewarne, exploring void and boundary
through flashes of light in transposed phases. This site specific
piece is the first work in the series that introduces a kinetic
element to the work with the lights hung from slow moving pendulums,
adding a secondary phase and rhythm to those of the lights. The
lights both momentarily illuminate the room in a burst of white
as well as creating a blue pointilised display through the windowfront
in an intangible, illusive, poetry of syncopated flashes.

#3 of medium, rare's Window Box Installation Series.

third part of an installation/live art trilogy.

question:
"What do you want to leave behind?"
Please participate by sending an SMS of your answer to 0422 995
649 before the 6th July.
All responses are anonymous.
".. I am a Sydney based visual artist/live performance
maker/writer. My diverse arts practice, investigates chaos and
order, beauty within the supposed grotesque, ritual, chance and
random collisions, the extraordinary in the ordinary and memory
and resonance in place. To survive, one must be able to flow but
inherent in that is to know when to be still.
I performed with the stilt company, Icarus for many years, touring
and travelling in Europe. I was also a longtime member of the
all-girl Sydney cult group Frumpus, who turn pop culture and b-grade
horror into a frumpy, lynchian rollercoaster. I am one of the
members of the Australian collective - Unreasonable Adults - who
devise, strategise and develop new live and mediated works."

'Loss'
Opening 5th June 09 -- POSTPONED, now opening
the 12th June
Showing 13th - 25th June
Perran Costi
|
#2 of medium, rare's Window Box Installation Series.
What happened to Autumn? One minute the leaves hung from the
trees in all their resplendent green glory, the next those same
leaves sit forlornly wet and crumpled in a gutter. What happened
to those warm orange tones we expect to see inbetween? How can
a whole season seem to disappear? And did anyone else even notice?
Loss is an installation which explores and articulates the experience
of expecting to find yourself in one place and instead finding
yourself in another. It both mourns and celebrates the passing
of time, and the subtle and not so subtle impact that this has
on both a personal and environmental level.
In keeping with Perrans previous work it employs photography,
sculpture, light and installation in an attempt to capture those
everyday moments which are often overlooked and yet profoundly
beautiful.

Greatest Hits
12th - 14th December 08
Solo exhibition by Chas Glover
|
Chas Glover's latest solo
show, "Greatest Hits", offers a unique, theatrical and
somewhat eerie commentary of the turmoil imbedded in the human psyche
The Sydney artist, who has been painting for over 20 years, gives
the viewer a voyeristic connection to a world of relative morality,
communicating raw and unscripted emotions which exist somewhere
in the space between dreams and reality.
Through oils and acrylics Chas creates a visual tension between
a world of alienation and repression, stripped of elegance, and
the freedom and irreverent humour of the absurd. Scenes often
embody hints of existential despair, psychosexual conflict, and
other forms of physical and emotional discord.
As the title suggests "Greatest Hits" presents a collection
of paintings from the last 3 years as well as an exciting body
of new work which offers a unique and darkly humorous insight
into the vulnerability of the human condition. His work has contemporary
aesthetic values whilst resembling a circus side-show of dark
imaginings that enforce an ideology of alienation.

The Bourke St Women
28th - 30th November 08
Solo exhibition by Gina Lamprell
|
The Bourke St Women - A series
of paintings of women, inspired by life in Bourke Street Sydney
by Gina Lamprell
Gina seeks to reflect the interior life of the women she sees
at work, at play, in love and in trouble. Living on Bourke Street,
Gina interacts with a diverse range of women - students, sex workers,
school girls, mothers, business women - with diverse life experiences.
Gina aims to capture aspects and moments of the women she paints
with bold statements of mood. Today's women are bombarded by notions
of the sacredness of the self. But which 'self' does a woman fulfil
when she exists in so many contexts - daughter, mother, wife,
lover, worker, student, to list a few... Every woman has many
selves. Often these selves are in conflict with each other. It
is this conflict that especially intrigues Gina as she tries to
distil this central dilemma and express it through her work.

The Dance of Devotion
22nd October 08
Workshop
|
The Dance of Devotion ...
a soul's journey into sanctuary.
This is a place to let your body land and rise; dance with delight
and surrender to the sacred. To meet whatever keeps you from that
state of being in a safe and grounded space that supports your unfolding.
A rising of that which serves our highest sense of self, and guides
our path in the playscape of community.
This is an invitation to come together in a sanctuary of communing
with the inner beloved. Meeting the mirror of that nurturance
in partnerings, and expanding our heart's capacity through the
passionate chemistry of group energy... where the witness affirms
and supports our inner growth to wholeness.
We cannot force change, but invite it, intend it, and gently
create the environment to engage the transformation we feel budding
within us.
It is the joy of being that compels us to share, to love, to
live a full and expressed life. That joy is in everything, waiting
as a resource, to be tapped into, expanded.
Of all the things we may wish to expand our capacity for, isn't
joy the one that most merits our attention?
Using music that compels, words that emerge and games that transform,
and feeling real shifts occur.
A weekend of big dancing, gentle tending and wild devotion.
Discover the nature of ecstasy at it's source.

extra cheese {art + design}
3rd - 5th October 08
an exhibition of various artists
|
extra cheeese is that tasty something more, the social upsize
that aims to break down the distinctions between artists and designers
by creating a collective melting pot to optimise existing relationships
and practices.
With its launch in 2007, extra cheeese re-invented the used pizza
box into an art medium, uniquely blending art and design with
the underlying concept of re-use.
2008 sees stage two play again on this foundation.
This time, the brief has been left open, with the medium consisting
of anything
as long as its a found object. This could
include anything from a discarded table, old books found at a
garage sale, or even second-hand clothing from the side of the
street.
Re-contextualisation and cross-overs within the creative disciplines
plays an integral role, and with a diverse line-up of contributors
you can expect a body of work that the eyes will be craving to
feast on.

'fantasy art exhibition'
- mardis gras 08
14 feb - 25 feb 08
an exhibition of various artists
|
"Dynamic, provocative and playful, Fantasy brings together
young queer women artists in an exhibition showcasing a versatile
line up of visual and performance art. "
As part of the 2008 Mardi Gras Festival calendar, a group of
women from Acon's Young Women's Project are putting together an
exhibition showcasing the work of young queer women's art in Sydney.
The exhibition will be featured as one of the highlights of Mardi
Gras Youth Week that runs from Sunday 10th - Saturday 16th February
and 'has been developed along the community development principles.
These principles include; capacity building in young people, increased
social connection and support, increased visibility for minority
groups, celebration of strength and resilience and provision of
a free and accessible space for all ages to enjoy.' (Siri May,
head of Lesbian Health, Acon.)
Artists exhibiting will be women from the Young Women's Project
and/or emerging artists from the greater queer community including
students from the College of Fine Arts (UNSW).
The funding for the exhibition was donated to Acon by the family
of a young woman involved with the Young Women's Project who took
her own life earlier this year. It was the request of the family
that this money be used to put something positive back into the
community and to help other young women struggling with their
health and sexuality.
The over-arching theme for the exhibition is fantasy, chosen
for its multiplicity of meanings and thus, its ability to be interpreted
in many different ways. Fantasy has strong links to imagination
and adventure, and to the construction of ideas and meaning beyond
reason and linearity. Through this thematic, we hope to see and
develop works that break boundaries, subvert and transcend convention,
and both enlighten and dissent.

'he says he's tired'
5 dec - 17 dec 07
Jessee Willisee
|
Jesse Willesee is a 22 year old artist and photographer currently
exploring, through his combination of art, poetry and spoken word,
the infantilization of post modernism as viewed through the eyes
of a generation that has appropriated it's fashions, ideas, ideals
and posturing from every significant music and pop cultural movement
prior to it's own, leaving it stripped backed to basics - as is
Willesse's art.
Using child-like illustration, incorrect spelling to highlight
the simplification of modern communication, tactile discarded
and found objects, and even beer coasters and canvas works left
out in the rain, he illustrates both the organized chaos of nomadic
existence and the breakdown of personal property, while using
those trinkets, transient objects found on the floor of share
houses, streets and the homes of loved and hated ones.
Willesee's work is an ode to the city he lives in, to it's ease
in casting aside trash and treasure alike.
More importantly, it speaks to and of the tribes of inner city
youth to which he belongs - their recklessness coupled so inseparably
with an immense sentimentality for the creative passions of the
pioneering libertines who came before them and left an insurmountable,
unrepeatable path of beautifully destructive creation.
When everything has already been done, you start at the beginning.
Willesee is seeking to differentiate the presentation of art
work from traditional channels and has thus far displayed his
works only at private shows where audiences are free to contribute
to the pieces - even manipulate them - as they see fit, in the
spirit of intellectual and emotional pastiche.
These shows are accompanied by his spoken word and music performances.
Due to popular demand, this is the first time Jesse Willesee
will be offering his collection for sale.

Kate Holden
|
'moving colours' by kate holden is an exhibition of large oils
on canvas which explores italy in summer, capturing the vibrant
colour and movement of light in a variety of dramatic landscapes.
kate majored in landscape painting in oils at the unsw college
of fine arts, taking her inspiration from the bush and colours
of sydney where she grew up, and the subtlety of the softer northern
light in scotland where she lived for ten years. kate's passion
as an artist has always been for colour, and landscapes that have
a natural energy or essence that stops you in your tracks.
join us at the opening this thursday 14th june 6-9pm, or while
it's showing for 2 weeks, 15th june to 24th june, thursday to
sunday, 12-6pm.

this is what i ate
17 may - 27 may 07
Patrick Boland
|
Drawing upon 1305 consecutive images of
food eaten by the artist over a one-year period this is what
I ate explores notions of the transience of food, the everydayness
transformed into the grotesque, food as middle-class affluence in
contemporary society and ways of seeing.
Eaten food is rarely considered past the day of consumption.
Favourite meals are often looked upon with fondness. The conceptualisation
of 1305 meals enables an audience to re-conceive
their relationships to food. The sequence makes the invisible
visible and presents an emotional reality as well as a physical
reality of the everydayness of consumption.

brett squires
and cath wadling
|
following close behind last week's successful
exhibition, this thursday night we have the opening of the hottest
photography exhibition of the year
any given moment.
this exhibition by brett squires and cath wadling reflects individual
moments from two different, yet related, perspectives. for cath,
the static image evokes a sense of narrative, melancholy and nostalgia;
the experience is bittersweet, since that instant can never be
re-lived. for brett, it's about connecting with the fleeting essence
of any given moment; to find that still space in which to observe
the 'now' as it becomes 'then'.
opening 7pm thursday 15th march, and showing for 2 weeks, friday
to sunday 16th to 25th march 12-5pm.

Edward Hornes installation investigates the relationship
between architectural space and the viewer by immersing the participant
in a contradictory world which at first seems fun but has a darker
side of surveillance and imprisonment.
Robyn Buchanans symmetrical sculptures seep into the viewers
subconscious and gently hypnotize the mind and body, while her

'otakulture'
11 - 21 May 06
Various Artists
|
If otaku - 'house' - was originally deployed to denigrate the
inward nature of these obsessions, it can now only mean 'house'
in the familial sense. These obsessions are home. These images
are the walls in which we live. These leaking, squeaking, freaking
faces with eyes larger than their souls are our parents and children.
The otaku way of life is - was always? immersed in friendship,
community, adventure, connoisseurship and beauty as much as it
ever was tinged by the lonely and the weird.
... an exhibition.
